For most cancers, the majority of physicians and researchers have agreed on a "standard treatment approach" - the way in which cancer should be treated based on years of systematic study and research.

Clinical trials involve research with  new  treatments and with new ways of using standard treatments.  In general, these trials test the effectiveness of a new treatment, usually in comparison with the best available standard treatment.  If a treatment has not been accepted as one of the standard treatments, it is called experimental or investigational.  Because of the experimental nature of the treatment, participating patients are monitored very carefully for side effects as well as for benefits.  A patient must give informed consent to participate in such research before any treatment is administered.

You may want to participate in a clinical trial for several reasons.  It may give you the opportunity to receive treatment that is more effective or less toxic than the standard treatment.  You may also be able to gain access to a new drug that is not generally available.  In addition, your participation in this research effort leads to a more rapid accumulation of knowledge that may help others.  The clinical trial process is a prerequisite for making progress in cancer treatment.

HemOnCare offers participation in many clinical trials through its collaboration with national cooperative groups, local universities, and pharmaceutical companies.

Lois Helgesen our Clinical Research Coordinator , Dr. Ahmed our principal investigator, or any of our physicians will gladly answer questions regarding our clinical trials.

Additionally we have information about and access to many other trial sites.  Please feel free to discuss any questions or interests you may have with us.  The National Cancer Institute maintains a clinical trials information resource at http://cancertrials.nci.nih.gov.
